Grateful Slug Night a Success

SANTA CRUZ, CA  -- The UC Santa Cruz Mens Basketball team hosted William Jessup University Thursday night as part of their first annual Grateful Slug night.

The event, a tribute to the Grateful Dead and sponsored by Woodstocks Pizza, featured tie-dye warm ups, free t-shirts for students, halftime give a ways and of course Grateful Dead music and memorabilia.

Players and coaches spent the week tie-dyeing 100 t-shirts to be worn in warm ups and given away to fans. The shirt logo, which was selected as part of an on-campus contest, displayed a Grateful Dead style design with the slogan "grateful slug."

The campus library, which hosts the donated memorabilia of the legendary band, lent out concert posters and autographed photos and displayed them in the West field House during the game.

In front of a full crowd at the Westfield House, the "grateful slugs" competed hard but came up short against a tough opponent.

The game was tight throughout, and wasn't decided until the final minutes when William Jessup guard Keenan Prince, who had 26 points in 26 minutes, hit three consecutive 3-pointers. This scoring outburst helped the Warriors pull ahead, eventually winning 66-59 victory.

The Banana Slugs were lead by sophomore James Townsend, who had 22 points in the contest.
