Slugs Beat the Kingsmen

For the second time this season, UC Santa Cruz was able to defeat Cal Lutheran by 10 points, this time winning 61-51 before the home crowd at the Slug Dome. Down 2-0 before the game even started due to a technical foul for a dunk during warm ups, the Slugs Jamien Jones tied the game up 29 seconds into the game on two free throws of his own. The early action in the game would account for five ties in the first seven minutes with both teams taking a slight lead. Nick Hipwell's jumper gave the Slugs a three point lead before a 8-0 run by the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran, capped by a three from Michael Palmer gave them their biggest lead of the game. A Sam Allen steal and layup cut the margin to three and the see-saw battle continued throughout the first half. Cal Lutheran had their last lead of the first half at 24-23 with just under a minute to go, before a 7-2 Slug run finished off the half, capped by a Kevin Konopelski three at the buzzer to give Santa Cruz a 30-26 lead at half time. The second half started off with Cal Lutheran making a short run and taking the lead 34-33 on an Aaron Van Klaveren lay up four minutes into the second half. Nate Morhi responded back with a floater to give the Slugs a one-point lead. Just as the first half, the game stayed close in the middle portion of the half, before the Slugs gradually pulled away. After Cal Lutheran cut the lead to two with six minutes left in the game, Santa Cruz went on a 5-0 over the next minute to go up by seven with a Brent Jacobs free throw concluding the run. From there on in, the Kingsmen never got closer than five points. The lead topped out at 10 points when Nick Hipwell hit his second free throw with 1:30 left in the game. Jamien Jones two free throws with 27 seconds left concluded the scoring and a Trent Reeves steal on the inbound pass allowed the Slugs to run out the clock. Aaron Van Klaveren was the games leading scorer with 14 points and his nine rebounds moved him to third all time on the Cal Lutheran rebounding list with 741. For the Slugs, Jamien Jones led the team in scoring (11), rebounds (10) and steals (3). Brent Jacobs added eight points and five rebounds to the cause. With his block last night, Brent has 63 for his career, moving him into third place on the all time Slug list behind Niel Brennan and Derek Jones.
