Slugs Slime Division I CSU Bakersfield

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- In the first home match of the season, the Slugs came ready to play. While the 2008-2009 season proved to be a difficult one for the women’s Slug program, the team demonstrated that this year they have left the past behind them. This year’s team, nearly double the size, consists of senior leaders Chrissy Nichol and Kyla Rowe, juniors Taylor Mannix and Krystal Garcia, sophomores Sarah Malone, Chloe McHugh and Becca Parker and freshmen Ariana Mokhtari, Rachel Shinto, Nicole Hannouche, Jordan Hutkin, and Suzanne Lipscomb.

The Slugs came out firing in doubles, playing very aggressive from the net. After battling on every court the Slugs went down 2-1. The number two doubles team of Kyla Rowe and Rachel Shinto disposed of their opponents in a timely fashion with an 8-2 victory. Going into the singles, the Slugs believing they could win rallied to take four out of the six matches. Wins at 1, 2, 4 and 6 put the Slugs up 5-4 awarding them their first division one victory in the program’s history. Freshmen, Ariana Mokhtari, clinched the win for the Slugs at the number one position. With this win under their belt, the team is excited to face division III opponents in the upcoming months and hopefully challenge for one of the top spots in the region. The Slugs want to thank all the fans that came out to support on Sunday. In their next home match, the Slugs will face Sierra University on Friday February 12th at 2pm on the East Courts.
