UCSC vs. Chapman

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Friday’s match between the UCSC Slugs and Chapman University was D3 independent grudge match.  The visiting Chapman University Men from Orange County came into Friday’s match ranked 4th in West with a record of 7-1-2, while the Slugs came into the match ranked #1 in the West (4th in the Nation, NSCAA) with a record of 8-0-1.  Both teams having something to prove, being hey are some of the few Division 3 Independent schools on the west coast.

The first half of the match saw chances from both teams early on with 4 shots on goal from the Panthers and 9 from the Slugs.  However the game remained a scoreless tie going into halftime.  It was the Slugs who drew blood first in the second half with a goal from Sophomore Cody Pillon.  Pillon managed to see the ball pop out to his feet after Freshman Aaron Surry hustled to scrap the ball from the Panthers goalkeeper.  Pillon took his time and drove the ball on a long shot over the defense for the game’s only goal, despite the Slugs outshooting the Panthers 18-9.

In the end the Slugs managed to hold off the visitors with a key save from  senior Matt Mahowald who in the last ten seconds of the game managed to save a point blank shot from a Panther corner kick.  The save helped to keep the Slugs unbeaten record alive at 9-0-1.  The Slugs will go onto face Fresno Pacific University, a top NAIA school on Tuesday October the 6th, then prepare for a three game road trip to Southern California.
