Slugs Take 2 at Cal Lu Classic
THOUSAND OAKS, CA -- In the opening night of the Cal Lutheran Classic UCSC matched up with the hosts Cal Lutheran University. The first half opened with the Slugs jumping to a quick 7-0 lead, a few minutes later they had a 20-8 advantage and looked in control. UCSC held a double digit advantage for most of the 1st half before Cal Lu finished on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 3. Freshman Center Tyler Hunt sparked the Slugs off the bench scoring 10 points while shooting a perfect 4/4 from the floor including 2 from long distance. The 2nd half was a great back and forth affair including 10 lead changes and 5 ties. With 4 minutes left Cal Lu took a 65-63 lead on a fast break layup, Junior Wing Greg Palmer would tie the game for the last time at 65 on the next Slugs possession. With under 2 minutes left on the clock Sophomore Forward Brent Jacobs followed a missed layup with a dunk to give UCSC a 67-65 lead. The dunk by Sophomore Forward Brent Jacobs proved to be the winning bucket as the Slugs were able to hold on for the win. Junior WingRyan Matsuoka’s 15 points and 6 boards paced the Slugs who got great contributions from Sophomore Forward Brent Jacobs who finished with 8 pts 10 rbs and 4 blks, Junior Wing Greg Palmer added 11 pts 4 rebs and 3 stls. Aaron Fisher led all scorers with 19 points for Cal Lu.
The second night UCSC faced off with Cal Tech, after holding a 42-26 advantage at the half the Slugs held on for a 73-59 win over the Beavers. Everyone got into the action vs Cal Tech as the Slugs were able to string together a couple of wins going into the Christmas Break. The Slugs were able to score 31 points off of turnovers and the bench outscored Cal Tech’s 36-6.Freshman Guard Alex Abarca led UCSC with 14 pts 5 boards and Senior Guard Ehson Mortezaie’s 12pts 4 assts and 2 stls sparked the Slugs all night. UCSC is off for the break until the face off with William Jessop on the 30th.
