Slugs Take Down Gaters
SANTA
CRUZ, CA -- Darrin Lew three with 8 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime, and a Ryan Matsuoka triple with 20 seconds left in the extra stanza proved to be the winner as UC Santa Cruz was able to knock off Division 2 San Francisco State 69-68 in an exhibition game in the West Field House. In what proved to be a highly contested pre season contest, the West Field House crowd saw two teams go back and forth to the wire for 45 minutes. The game was knotted at half time at 35 thanks to a Ted Monson lay-up as time winded down. Monson and Matsuoka led all scorer’s with 9 and 8 points apiece at the break. The second half saw the lead change a number of times, both teams making runs with SFSU holding the largest lead 47-43. With 1:51 left in regulation SFSU held a 59-53 advantage, the Slugs would score the final 6 points including Lew’s clutch 3 off an assist from Matsuoka. In overtime their were 3 more ties, the last being at 66. With under a minute to go a Slugs turnover led to a Marquel Hoskins lay-in giving the Gators a 68-66 lead with 37 ticks left. After a UCSC time-out, The found Matsuoka on the right wing with 20 seconds left and he dialed up a long distance three proving to be the game winner. SFSU had 2 opportunities to win the game but failed to convert on both, Greg Palmer grabbed the final rebound as time expired and UCSC prevailed. The Gators balanced attack was led by Phoenix O’Rourke’s 16 points. Matsuoka’s 20 points and 4 boards paced the Slugs, Lew adding 16 and Monson 10. Up next the Slugs host their annual Alumni game this Saturday at 6 pm in the West Field House. .
