Slugs Outlast Hawks

SANTA CRUZ , CA -- The UCSC Men’s Hoop Squad continued their roll winning their 4th straight vs the Cal Pac Conference, taking down Holy Names University 60-57 on Tuesday night in Oakland. HNU came into the contest on a 5 game win streak of their own and sitting atop the Cal Pac Conference at 5-0.

The first half was a back and forth affair, neither team shooting the ball well or able to gain much momentum. Holy Names held a 23-17 advantage with 2 minutes left in the half before UCSC ran off a 7-0 spurt and took the lead on Brent Jacobs lay-up as the half came to a close. Ryan Matsuoka and Eric Norton led the Slugs with 7 apiece, while David Scott led HNU with 7.

The 2nd half was much like the first with the game continuing to go back and forth, each team exchanging leads. Again it would be a late run to close the half that would prove to be the difference for the Slugs. Down 55-49 with 3 minutes to play UCSC would finish with a flurry, an 11-2 run capped by a Jacobs lay-up on an inbounds play with 3 seconds to go for the final score of 60-57. Jacobs would lead the Slugs with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Matsuoka would add 14 points 3 assists and 2 steals. Josh Smith paced Holy Names with 14 points of his own.

Next for the Slugs is the D3 Independent Round Robin hosted by La Sierra University in Riverside this weekend. The Slugs will face off with no.14 Chapman, University of Dallas and La Sierra University.
