Home Sweet Home

SANTA CRUZ , CA -- For the first time since a season opening overtime victory over San Francisco State in an exhibition game on November 11th the UCSC Men’s Hoop Team returned to the West Field House. A packed gym welcomed local rival Bethany University to the UC Santa Cruz campus for an exciting Friday night contest.

Ryan Matsuoka got things going for the Slugs early and often, though slowed by foul trouble his 9 points in the first half would pace the slugs and help UCSC to a 29-22 advantage at the break. In the opening seconds of the 2nd stanza Matsuoka would pick up his 4th foul and have to head to the bench. With Matsuoka on the bench Bethany was able to slowly creep back into the game, even taking a lead midway through the half. Jason Maples, Joey Kreuter and Tauran Moore led the charge for a short handed Bruin squad. The trio combined for 44 of Bethany’s 55 points and would hit big shots all night long. With 6 minutes left Matsuoka re-entered the game and UCSC went on a game deciding run. A thunderous tip jam from Brent Jacobs sent the crowd into a frenzy, a minute later Niel Brennan finished a break with a dunk of his own and the Slugs wouldn’t look back. UCSC would finish with a 64-55 win, Matsuoka paced the Slugs scoring with 18 points, Darrin Lew added 11 points 7 boards and Eric Norton led the charge off the bench with 10 points and 7 assists.

Next for the Slugs is a Thursday (Jan 14, 2010) HOME game in the West Field House vs. Pacific Union College at 7:00pm. Then on Saturday (Jan 16, 2010) HOME vs Menlo College at 7:00pm. Come support your UCSC Men’s Hoop Team!
