CRYSTAL SPRINGS: - The UC Santa Cruz cross country teams opened the 2016 season facing tough competition at the Notre Dame Argo Invite.
Facing mostly NCAA Division II competition, the men's team placed second and the women's team placed third. In his first college race, freshman Paul Colosi(pictured) finished 8th out of 30 runners on the 6.75 kilometer course. His time of 22:09 helped the Slugs edge Cal State Stanislaus on the tie-breaker for 2nd place behind Alaska-Anchorage. Sophomore Dante Capone placed 11th in 22:19, followed by freshman Zahd Anjum (22:57.4) and junior Takeshiro Yamaya (22:57.8) in 13th and 14th respectively.
On the women's side, the Slugs finished the 5K behind Alaska-Anchorage and Stanislaus, beating Sonoma State on another tie-breaker in the seven-team field. Shannon McClish was the top runner, finishing 10th in a time of 20:11.8. Jordan Rich was 16th, finishing in 20:48.8. Autumn Burton (21:11.1) and Lizzie Meredith (21:13.5) finished 18th and 19th.
UC Santa Cruz heads south for their next met, participating at the UC Riverside invitational September 17th.
