Banana Slugs Finish Oregon Trail Classic with Two Losses

FOREST GROVE (9-1) – UC Santa Cruz finished the Oregon Trail Classic as they took on Whitman College and Pacific University. The Banana Slugs fell 3-1 to the Blues and lost 3-1 to the Boxers.

Match #1 – vs. Whitman

In the first set, the Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at two on two occasions; the second at 6-4 on an assisted block by Shania Andrews and Isabella Hoglund. After the Blues gained their largest lead of the set at nine at 21-12, the Banana Slugs came as close as one at 24-23 on a service ace by Shania Andrews. The Blues won the first set 25-23.  In the second set, the Blues started the set on a 14-4 run. The Banana Slugs came as close as nine at 20-11 on a Claire Okerlund kill. The Blues won the second set 25-11. In the third set, the two teams would trade points for the first twenty serves. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at 16-13 on a Blues' attack error. After the Blues took a two-point lead at 20-18, the Banana Slugs went on a 7-2 run set-ending run to win the third set 25-22. In the fourth set, the Blues started the set on a 7-0 run. The Banana Slugs trimmed the lead to four at 13-9 on an attack error by the Blues. The Blues won the fourth set 25-13.

Alexandria Everett led Banana Slugs with twelve kills.

Match #2 vs. Pacific

In the first set, the Banana Slugs would start the set on a 6-1 run capped by a solo block by Holly Teisher. The Boxers would go on a 16-9 run capped by a service ace to take the lead at 17-15. The Banana Slugs would take the lead back and win the first set 25-23. In the second set, the two teams would trade points for the first fourteen serves. The Boxers would take the lead for good at 8-7. The Boxers won the second set 25-18. In the third set, the Boxers would start the set on a 10-3 run and would win the third set 25-9. In the fourth set, the Boxers started the set on an 11-4 run and won the fourth set 25-13.

Claire Okerlund had 13 kills to lead the Slugs and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Banana Slugs will finish their time in Oregon as they will take on College of New Rochelle at 10 am.
