Banana Slugs Start Season with Two Losses in Oregon Trail Tournament

NEWBERG (8-31) UC Santa Cruz started their 2018 season at the Oregon Trail Classic and fell to Whitworth 3-1 in the morning and lost 3-1 to George Fox in the evening match.  

Match #1 – vs. Whitworth

In the first set, the Banana Slugs would  go on a 14-7 run, capped by a Pirates' attack error, to take their largest lead of the set at four at 15-11. The Pirates would chip away at the lead and tied it at 17 before winning 25-23. In the second set, the Banana Slugs started the set with a 5-2 spurt capped by a Claire Okerlund kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at six at 23-17 on a kill by Isabella Hoglund and won the second set 25-21.

In the third set, the two teams would trade points for the first ten serves. After the set was tied at 5-5, the Pirates would go on a 10-4 run to give the Pirates their largest lead of the set at six, at 15-9. The Banana Slugs would respond with a 9-1 run of their own to take a 18-16 lead, but the Pirates scored the last four points of the set and would win the set 25-22. In the fourth set, the Banana Slugs would take the lead at 13-12 on Okerlund's kill and take their largest lead of the set at 14-12, on Jordan Kirchner's kill. The Pirates came back and would take the lead for good at 18-17 and won the fourth set 25-19.

Hoglund led UCSC with 11 kills in her first college match.

Match #2 vs. George Fox

In the first set, the Bruins would start the set on a 4-0 spurt and would take their largest lead of the set at eleven, at 22-11, on a service ace before winning the set 25-16. In the second set, the two teams would trade points for the first six serves. The Banana Slugs would go on a 12-7 run capped by a Hoglund kill to take the lead at 15-10 before winning the second set 25-23. In the third set, the Bruins would start the set on a 13-4 run and would win the third set 25-10. In the fourth set, the two teams  traded points for the first ten serves, but the Bruins would gain the lead for good at 6-5 and won the fourth set 25-18.

Okerlund had 12 kills to lead the Slugs.

The Banana Slugs will play two matches tomorrow as they will take on Whitman College at 3 pm and Pacific University at 5:30 pm.
