CLAREMONT (10-14) - UC Santa Cruz finished up their weekend trip to Southern California as they took on NCAA Division III #8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont. The Banana Slugs were swept 3-0 by the Athenas.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 3-0 to NAIA member Vanguard University last night in Costa Mesa while the Athenas won 3-0 over California Institute of Technology yesterday in Claremont.
In the first set, the Athenas would start the set with a 5-0 spurt capped by a Margaux Arntson kill. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one, at 6-5, on a service ace by Claire Okerlund. The Athenas would take a double-digit lead, at 24-14, on a service ace by Shelbi Stein. The Athenas would gain their largest lead of the set at eleven, at set point, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Athenas won the first set 25-14 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the teams would trade points for the first four serves. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at one, at 3-2, on an assisted block by Kallan Bedard and Alexandria Everett. The Athenas would score the next three points to take the lead for good at 5-3. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one, at 5-4, on an Athenas' attack error. The Athenas would gain a double-digit lead, at 17-7, on a Crystal Anderson kill. The Athenas would gain their largest lead of the set at eighteen, at set point, on a Mariah Rigg kill. The Athenas won the second set 25-7 and extended their lead to 2-0.
In the third set, the Athenas started the set on a 4-0 spurt capped by an assisted block by Arntson and Rigg. The Athenas would gain their largest lead of the set at ten, at 22-12, on a Melanie Moore kill. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 10-0 run, capped by a service ace by Rachel Sveiven, to tie the set at 22-22. After the Banana Slugs tied the match at 23-23 on a Krysti Photias kill, the Athenas would score the next two points to win the third set 25-23 and won the match 3-0.
For UC Santa Cruz, Tatum Novitzky had eight kills and for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Crystal Anderson had a match high eleven kills. Krysti Photias had sixteen assists for UC Santa Cruz and Clara Madsen had a match high thirty five for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Sveiven led the Banana Slugs with twelve digs and Mikena Werner had a match high fifteen digs for the Athenas. Sierra Yuen had an assisted block to go to 102 total roofs in her career, passing Elena Echeverria to make the UCSC career top ten list.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .058 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .263 while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps had a .380 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .421. The Athenas had twelve more combined blocks (18-6) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will have two matches on their next game day. Next Saturday, the Banana Slugs will take on NAIA member University of Antelope Valley in Lancaster at 1 pm and California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks at 6 pm.
