Banana Slugs Sweep Warriors

ROCKLIN (10-12) – The Banana Slugs continued their road trip as they took on NAIA member William Jessup University in Rocklin. The Banana Slugs swept the Warriors 3-0.

Both teams won their last match. The Banana Slugs defeated Muhlenberg College 3-2 on Saturday in La Verne while the Warriors defeated Arizona Christian University 3-2 on Saturday in Phoenix. 

In the first set, the Warriors would start the set with a 3-0 spurt capped by a Vendela Williams kill. The Banana Slugs responded with a 5-0 spurt of their own capped by a service ace. The Warriors would tie the set at 7-7 on a service ace and then would take the lead at 8-7 on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Warriors would take their largest lead of the set, at six, at 13-7 on a Makenzie Reeder-Esparza kill. The Banana Slugs would work their way back into the set and would take the lead for good at 20-19 on a Warriors' attack error. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at four on two occasions; the second occasion at 24-20 on a Shania Anderson kill. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-23 and won the first set 1-0.

In the second set, the Banana Slugs would start the set with an 11-6 spurt capped by a Tatum Novitzky kill. The Warriors would work their way back into the set and would tie the set at 15-15 on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Banana Slugs would gain the lead for good, at 16-15, on the next serve on a Warriors' bad set. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at six, at 24-18, on a service ace. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-20 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Warriors would start the set with a 5-1 spurt capped by a Reeder-Esparza kill. The Banana Slugs would then go on an 8-3 run capped by a service ace. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at five on two occasions; the second occasion at 16-11 on a service ace. The Warriors would work their way back into the set and would take the lead, at 24-23, on a Kassidy Heuvelhorst kill. The Banana Slugs would stave off set points twice. The Banana Slugs would tie the match at 26-26 on an Erica Allen kill and would take the lead for good, at 27-26, on a Warriors' bad set. The Banana Slugs won the third set 28-26 and won the match 3-0. The win extended the Banana Slugs' winning streak to two.

For UC Santa Cruz, Kallan Bedard and Novitzky had a match high nine kills apiece and for William Jessup, Reeder-Esparza also had nine kills. Alana Susbilla had a match high eighteen assists for UC Santa Cruz and Jessica Williams had twelve for William Jessup. Novitzky led the Banana Slugs with a match high fifteen digs and Taylor Jacky had ten digs for the Warriors.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .171 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .179 while William Jessup had a .081 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .125. The Banana Slugs had nine more service aces (16-7) than did the Warriors.

The Banana Slugs will have their next match on Friday October 21st as they will wrap their road trip as they take on Mills College in Oakland at 7 pm.
