Banana Slugs Trip In Doubleheader

LA VERNE (10-10) – UC Santa Cruz played in two matches at the Leopard Invitational in La Verne as they took on the host University of La Verne and Juniata College. The Banana Slugs were swept 3-0 in both matches.

In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost to Whittier College 3-0 yesterday in La Verne. In their last matches, University of La Verne defeated Austin College 3-1 last Saturday while Juniata defeated Whittier 3-0 in La Verne yesterday.

Match #1 vs. University of La Verne

In the first set, the two teams would trade points for the first ten serves. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at two, at 8-6, on a Tatum Novitzky kill. The Leopards would get back into the set and would take the lead for good, at 10-9, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Leopards would gain their largest lead of the set at nine on two occasions; the second occasion at set point on a Banana Slugs block error. The Leopards won the first set 25-16 and took a 1-0 match lead.

In the second set, the Leopards would jump out to a 5-1 lead and would lead for the entire set. The Leopards would gain their largest lead of the set at nine, at 23-14, on a Delaney Lynch kill. The Leopards won the second set 25-20 and took a 2-0 match lead.

In the third set, the Leopards would start the set with a 5-0 run which was capped by a Kelsi Robinson kill. The Banana Slugs would come as close as two on two different occasions; the second occasion coming at 7-5 on a Novitzky kill. The Leopards would gain their largest lead of the set at seven, at 21-14, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Leopards would go to win the third set 25-21 and win the match 25-21.

For UC Santa Cruz, Novitzky had a match high twelve kills and for La Verne, Brittany Yaxley also had a match high twelve kills. Sophie Seiberth had twenty six assists for UC Santa Cruz and Tiffany Mancuso had twenty seven for La Verne. Maya Lloyd led the Banana Slugs with ten digs and Ashlyn Cross had a match high seventeen digs for the Leopards.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .101 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .267 while University of La Verne had a .232 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .344. The Leopards had thirteen more assists (42-29) than did the Banana Slugs.

Match #2 vs. Juniata College

In the first set, the Eagles would score the first two points of the set and would lead wire-to-wire. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one on two occasions; the second occasion coming at 3-2 on an Eagles' service error. The Eagles would gain their largest lead of the set at thirteen, at 23-10, on a Megan Moroney kill. The Eagles would win the first set 25-13 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Eagles would jump out to a 5-1 lead. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one on two occasions; the second occasion was at 17-16, on a bad set by the Eagles. The Eagles would expand their lead to four, at 21-17, on a Banana Slugs' service error. The Banana Slugs would claw their way back into the set and would take the lead at 24-23 on a service ace. The Eagles, however, would score three straight points to win the second set 26-24 and extended their match lead to 2-0.

In the third set, the Eagles would lead the entire set as they scored the first two points of the set. The Eagles would expand their lead to seven, at 12-5, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Banana Slugs' would go on an 8-2 run capped by an ace to make the score 14-13. The Eagles would outscore the Banana Slugs 11-5 during the remainder of the set to win the set 25-18. The Eagles won the match 3-0.

For UC Santa Cruz, Madison Waddell had seven kills and for Juniata, Moroney had a match high eleven kills. Sophie Seiberth had nineteen assists for UC Santa Cruz and Kelly Reynolds had a match high forty one for Juniata. Lauren Cruz led the Banana Slugs with twelve digs and Bryce Arnold had a match high sixteen digs for the Eagles.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .096 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .138 while Juniata had a .318 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .485. The Eagles had seventeen more assists (42-25) than did the Banana Slugs.

The next match for the Banana Slugs will be next Saturday as they take on University of Redlands in Redlands. The first serve is set for 2 pm.
