Athenas Spear Banana Slugs

THOUSAND OAKS (9-12) – Claremont-Mudd-Scripps had eight service aces and held the Banana Slugs to a .107 hitting percentage as they swept the Banana Slugs 3-0 in the second game of the day for the Banana Slugs. The match took place at the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational in Thousand Oaks.

In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 3-0 to California Lutheran University yesterday in Thousand Oaks while the Athenas won 3-0 over Providence Christian College earlier today in Thousand Oaks. 

In the first set, the Athenas had nearly twice as many kills as the Banana Slugs as they led from the first serve as they won the first set 25-14 and took a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the Athenas led wire-to-wire as they converted thirteen kills and won the set 25-19 and took a 2-0 lead in the match. In the third set, the Banana Slugs converted fourteen kills but also had eight errors as the Athenas won the third set 25-18 and won the match 3-0.

For UC Santa Cruz, Tatum Novitzky had six kills and for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Crystal Anderson had a match high twelve kills. Sophie Seiberth had thirteen assists for UC Santa Cruz and Taylor Hoke had a match high twenty six for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Hailey McDaniel led the Banana Slugs with thirteen digs and Nicole Kerkhof had a match high seventeen digs for the Athenas.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .107 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second and third set at .111 while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps had a .278 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .320. The Athenas had ten more assists (39-29) than did the Banana Slugs while the Banana Slugs had four more digs (66-62) than did the Athenas.

The Banana Slugs will finish up their time in Thousand Oaks as they take on Whittier College. The first serve is set for 6 pm.
