Pioneers Trample Banana Slugs

ANGWIN (8-18) – Pacific Union College had twenty three more kills than the Banana Slugs and held the Banana Slugs to a .068 hitting percentage as the Pioneers defeated UC Santa Cruz 3-1.

In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 3-1 to Notre Dame De Namur University on Tuesday in Belmont while the Pioneers won 3-0 over Life Pacific College yesterday in Angwin. 

In the first set, the two teams would trade points for the first six serves. The Pioneers would go on a 7-0 run capped by a Lauren Purdom kill to make the score 10-3. The Pioneers would expand their lead to double digits, at 18-8, on an Amanda Loeffler kill. The Pioneers' largest lead of the set was thirteen, at 23-10, on a Banana Slugs' set error. The Pioneers went on to the first set 25-13 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Pioneers started with a 3-0 burst, capped by a Banana Slugs set error. The Pioneers would gain their largest lead of the set, at 17-8, on a Pioneers' ace. The Banana Slugs would trim the Pioneers' lead to one, at 23-22, on a Sierra Yuen kill. The Pioneers, however, would gain the final two points of the set and would win the set 25-22 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Pioneers would gain their only lead at 1-0 on an ace. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good, at 2-1, on an ace. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at nine, at 17-8, on a Pioneers' attack error. The Pioneers would close the Banana Slugs' lead to four on four different occasions; the fourth coming at 24-20 on an ace. Maya Lloyd would get a kill on the next serve and the Banana Slugs won the third set 25-20 and would trim the Pioneers' match lead to 2-1.

In the fourth set, the Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at 4-2 on a Kallan Bedard kill. The Pioneers clawed their way back into the set and would take the lead at 8-7 on a Kourtney Davidson kill. The Pioneers would take their largest lead of the set at four on three occasions; the third occasion at 24-20 on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Pioneers won the fourth set 25-20 and won the match 3-1.

For UC Santa Cruz, Lloyd had nine kills and for Pacific Union, Loeffler had a match high twenty one kills. Gabriela Delarosa had twenty seven assists for UC Santa Cruz and Athena Abary had a match high twenty eight for Notre Dame De Namur. Bedard led the Banana Slugs with thirteen digs and Sarah Cusick had a match high twenty one digs for the Pioneers.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .068 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .129 while Pacific Union had a .226 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .536. The Pioneers had ten more digs (77-67) than did the Banana Slugs.

The Banana Slugs will play their next match tomorrow as they take on another NAIA member UC Merced in Merced. The first serve is set for 7:30 pm.
