Women's tennis hosts Fall Invitational

UCSC's Women's tennis team enjoyed some home courttime on the warm weekend in their Fall Invitational.

The team hosted Mills College, Dominican University, Holy Names and Stanislaus State in the two-day event that used the East Field House courts and the Rachel Carson College. Three different brackets were used for singles competitors with two brackets for doubles.

"It was great to host such a high-level competitive event on our campus. The event showcased some of NorCal's best collegiate tennis," said head coach Amy Jensen. "Our Slugs pushed themselves well throughout the weekend. Our focus is on long term development: setting 'mini goals' to work on skills and tactics that will serve us well in the future."

Vera Smekalina won the C Singles consolation, while Therese Recidoro and Savannah Hammick were Consolation runners-up in the A and B flights respectively. Recidoro and Smekalina won the A doubles consolation.

"We had several injuries but the whole team did a brilliant job of sticking together, cheering and coaching and supporting one another," Jensen said.
"I think this weekend will inspire some great team practices for the Slugs so that we can prepare to battle 1-on-1 with each of these teams in our regular season!"

The three Singles flights were swept by Stanislaus State. The Stanislaus team of Ebone Qualls and Taylor Galya won the "B" Doubles, while Dominican's Ricki Torres and Skylar Shaar won the "A" doubles.

The tennis team has an exhibition on Saturday against Folsom Lake College to finish its Fall season.
