UC Santa Cruz perfect against Mills in home finale

SANTA CRUZ - UC Santa Cruz defeated Bay Area rival Mills College 9-0.

The Banana Slugs took two of the doubles matches with a walkover win over head coach Amy Jensen's former school.UCSC's Vera Smekalina and Claire Stoner swept swept Christine Wu and Jade Le at No. 1 8-0 while Ashley Brudzinski and Zoë Brook won at No. 2 8-3 over Gwendolynn Fernstrom and Dana Culpepper.

The strong play continued at singles where UCSC won four of the five matches in straight sets. Brudzinski swept Fernstrom at No. 2. Smekalina beat Wu 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1. Callie Matthews and Jessica Kirschmann won at 3 and 4 singles respectively.

The closest match was at No. 5 where the Slugs' Monica Guerrero held off Mills' Grace Deaton, winning a tie-breaker 14-12 after Guerrero won the first set 6-2 and Deaton took the second 6-1.

With rainy weather cancelling the scheduled home match against Notre Dame de Namur, UCSC finishes the regular season next Saturday at Academy of Art University before participating at the Ojai Tournament Apr. 27-30.
