Goals by Rodriguez and Shaw lead women's soccer to 2-0 victory

SANTA CRUZ - UC Santa Cruz used a 25-3 shot advantage to never let Providence Christian up for air in a 2-0 victory Thursday.

UCSC finishes the regular season 5-14-1.

The Banana Slugs dominated possession from the start, with six shots in the first 14 minutes. The Banana Slugs broke through on Gabriela Rodriguez's goal with 1:19 until halftime. On the senior's third shot-on-goal in a five-minute span, Rodriguez finished a give-and-go from Julianne Hoeflich by slotting it under the goalie from close range.

UCSC added to the lead in the 72nd minute when Cayce Shaw finished off a cross from Tomiko Hoshjima for the game's final goal.

The Banana Slugs finished the game holding off one last Sea Beggar charge in the final two minutes to preserve the shutout. In fact, UCSC got two shots off in the dying seconds, with Claire Lim's 20 yard goal judged to have crossed the line after the final horn sounded.

Malia Starita got the win recording a save on PCC's only shot on goal. Her Sea Beggar counterpart Courtney Osburn finished with eight saves.
