SAN RAFAEL - Late goals from Lily Dubuc and Ivy Torres gave the Dominican Penguins a 2-0 win over UC Santa Cruz Sunday afternoon.
Dominican (2-2-1) finished with 17 shots to 3 for UCSC, who fell to 1-7.
UCSC stayed on even terms in the first half against the Penguins, with Gabby Powell and Izel Gutierrez having good chances with strong shots from outside that forced Dominican 'keeper Alyssa Ramos into a save. UCSC keeper Alie Mandel kept the first half shutout with a pair of kick saves.
In the second half however, Dominican kept up the pressure and had three good shots on goal, but the backline of Joelle Steichen, Katie Schinnerer, Peyton Bell and Powell kept them from bothering Mandel. The Penguins finally broke through in the 70th minute when Dubuc's glancing header from a Torres freekick gave the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The game went back and forth with the Slugs staving off Dominican's attacks but were unable to get any looks themselves. The game was decided in the 86th minute as Torres's long shot went in for her first goal of the year and the game-winner.
UCSC ends their three-game Division II road stint at Sonoma State on Friday.
