LA VERNE - Jessica Hernandez's Golden Goal sent visiting UC Santa Cruz to a 1-0 defeat at La Verne.
UCSC (1-4) outshot the Leopards 10-9 and had four corners to one for the hosts, who improved to 3-0.
After being stymied in their previous loss at Redlands, UCSC opened the game with four shots in the first 14 minutes. Julianne Hoeflich had a pair that forced quick saves Hanien Samara. The game went into a more settled pace until halftime, with the hosts having a chance to take the lead but the shot was saved by freshman Malia Starita.
La Verne had the possession in the second half but the Slugs held and in fact nearly scored on a pair of corners in the 61st and 62 minute. La Verne held however, and the game would remain even and scoreless the rest of the half. UCSC had the last good chance to win in regulation but Hoeflich's shot sailed high.
In Overtime, the Leopards nearly converted their only corner kick of the match, but Hernandez's shot was stopped by Starita. The Slugs countered looking for the winner, but Cayce Shaw had her attempt stopped by substitute goalie Jasmine Valadez.
The Leopards then raced back and with under a minute left, Hernandez scored the goal to keep her squad undefeated.
Starita had a season-best six saves in the loss. The Slugs finish their so-cal road trip tomorrow at 1PM at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
