Banana Slugs split Slugfest Classic to open sesaon

SANTA CRUZ - The UCSC Women's soccer team went 1-1 in the Slugfest Classic to open the 2017 season.

The Slugs fell in their opener 4-1 to Chapman but bounced back 48 hours later to knock off Whitman 2-1 in Overtime.

On Friday, UCSC fell behind 3-0 in the first half. Regrouping at halftime with a change in personnel and tactics, the Slugs attacked more and had better possession in the first 15 minutes of the half. Their push paid off in the 60th minute when freshman Izel Gutierrez curled in a 30-yard free kick to pull one back.

The Panthers added another with 14 minutes left to restore their three-goal lead and win the game.

On Sunday, the team rebounded with a 2-1 overtime win against Whitman. Sophomore Julianne Hoeflich scored her first two collegiate goals, finishing the contest eight minutes gone in the first overtime with a header that settled in the right corner.

"It was great to see a player come out and have an impact on the game from the start of the season," said head coach Lauren Nadler.

The Slugs continue their week with a neutral-site Labor Day game against Rocky Mountain College in Atherton.
