OAKLAND (10-28) – UC Santa Cruz played their first match of their final road trip of the season as they took on Mills College. The Banana Slugs scored two goals in the first six minutes of play and beat the Cyclones 5-1.
Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost 3-2 to NCAA Division II member San Francisco State in Santa Cruz on Monday while the Cyclones fell 2-0 to NAIA member La Sierra University in Riverside on October 16th.
In the first half, the Banana Slugs would get on the scoreboard first. With 42:55 left in the first half, Kacie Ring took a pass from Claire Lim and hit the ball into the back of the net to give the Banana Slugs a 1-0 lead. Just over three minutes later, with 39:02 left in the half, Alex Arce took a pass from Taylor Keenan and scored to give the Banana Slugs a 2-0 lead. The Banana Slugs would score again with 17:11 left on an Emma Wilson shot to give the Banana Slugs a 3-0 lead. The Banana Slugs led 3-0 at the halftime intermission.
In the second half, the Banana Slugs would get on the scoreboard again. With 24:52 left in the match, Cayce took a pass from Taylor Keenan and kicked the ball into the back of the net giving the Banana Slugs a 4-0 advantage. The Cyclones would get a goal back with 7:50 left on a Jessica Wong goal trimming the Banana Slugs' advantage to 4-1. The Banana Slugs would score again with 51 seconds left on an Olivia Stewart goal to give the Banana Slugs a 5-1 lead. The Banana Slugs won 5-1. The win ended the Banana Slugs losing streak at two.
Shaw had a match high five shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Mills, Ashley Crespin had two shots. Athena Del Rosario got the win for the Banana Slugs while Madison Cantrell got the loss for the Cyclones. The Banana Slugs outshot the Cyclones 24-5 and the Banana Slugs had ten more corner kicks (10-0) than did the Cyclones.
The next match for the Banana Slugs will be Sunday as they take on NAIA member UC Merced in Merced. Kickoff is set for 4 pm.
