OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Megan Carey, UC Santa Cruz forward, has been named the Association of Division III Independents women's soccer Player of the Week.
Carey, a senior from Encinitas, Calif., carried UCSC to take down fellow AD3I member Illinois Institute of Technology this Sunday. The forward recorded her first career hat-trick during the game, sparking a 4-1 win. Through the week, Carey had five shots on goal, and now leads the Slugs with 5 goals on the year.
Women's Soccer Head Coach Emily Scheese, responded to the awards. "I was thrilled by Megan Carey's performance vs. Illinois Tech. We all know she is capable of great things as she demonstrated vs. Cal State East Bay in her tremendous goal there the previous week against Division II competition. What was great about her hat-trick in Saturday's performance was that it came after meticulous individual training on top of the work we did as a team to prepare last week. I came to practice to find Megan there early, already working on hundreds of repeated shots and finishes. Her outstanding commitment to execution and training is what helped her carry her team to victory last week, which was evident in the team's wanting to crowd surf her post-game. I couldn't be more proud of the stellar work ethic demonstrated by a talented captain."
Carey is moving her way up in the AD3I Rankings, and is now ranked top 10 in goals scored. The Slugs will be going head to head with William Jessup on Monday, Oct. 17th at 12pm.
