CLAREMONT (9-4) – UC Santa Cruz played their third match in four days as they took on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont. The Athenas scored two second half goals to defeat the Banana Slugs 3-0.
Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost 3-0 to Pomona-Pitzer in Pomona on Friday while the Athenas lost 2-0 to NAIA member Biola University in La Mirada yesterday.
The Athenas would control the possession in the first half. However, the Athenas would not come away any goal to show for it. The Athenas would have two chances at the end of the first half to score, but Banana Slugs' goalie Selina Davila Olivera saved both shots. The two teams were tied 0-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the two teams would play evenly matched soccer for the first thirty minutes of the half. With 29:01 remaining in the match, Katelyn Faust took a pass from Samantha Lee and shot into the back of the net to give the Athenas a 1-0 advantage. The Athenas would strike again about seventeen minutes of clock time later on a Gabrielle Clouse goal to give the Athenas a 2-0 lead. The Banana Slugs would not get another chance at scoring and the Athenas won the match 2-0.
Megan Carey had a match high three shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, four players (Ellen Berkley, Faust, Laynee Laube and Margaret Loncki) also had a match high three shots. Kelly McConnell got the win for the Athenas while Davila Olivera got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Athenas outshot the Banana Slugs 22-7 and the Athenas had eight more corner kicks (10-2) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will have their next match on Friday, in their home opener, as they will take on George Fox University. Kickoff is set for 3 pm.
