CLAREMONT (10-11) – Claremont-Mudd-Scripps overcame a two goal deficit to defeat UC Santa Cruz in Claremont 3-2. The match is the second of six consecutive road matches for the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs lost 5-0 to NCAA Division II member Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park on Friday while the Athenas defeated University of Redland s 2-0 in Claremont yesterday.
In the first half, the Banana Slugs would strike first with a goal by Megan Carey with 33:44 remaining in the half to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Banana Slugs. A little over three minutes of clock time later, Emily Vanasse would add the Banana Slugs' second tally to make the score 2-0. The Banana Slugs' lead would be trimmed in half with 11:41 remaining in the half as Ellen Berkley scored a goal for the Athenas cutting the Banana Slugs' lead to 2-1. The Banana Slugs led at the half 2-1.
In the second half, the two teams played back and forth for the first twenty one minutes. With 23:21 remaining in the match, Remi Edwards of the Athenas headed the ball in to tie the match at 2-2. With just over five minutes remaining, Katelyn Faust of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored to give the Athenas a 3-2 lead. The Banana Slugs were unable to gain another shot as the Athenas won 3-2.
Carey had four shots for the Banana Slugs and Faust had a match high five shots for the Athenas. The win for the match went to Kelly McConnell for the Athenas and the loss went to Selina Davila Olivera for UC Santa Cruz. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps had a 22-14 advantage in shots while UC Santa Cruz had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Banana Slugs play their next match tomorrow as they take on Chapman University in Orange. The match is set to start at 4 pm.
