SANTA CRUZ (9-13) – UC Santa Cruz nearly doubled their opponents in shots and Selina Davile Olivera earned her second shutout of the season as the Banana Slugs won 2-0 over Pacific University. The match was the final match of the 2015 Slugfest.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs tied University of La Verne 0-0 on Friday in Santa Cruz while Pacific lost 2-1, in two overtimes, to Whitworth University in Santa Cruz.
In the first half, the two teams played back and forth soccer with both teams trying to find a competitive edge on the other. The two teams went into the halftime intermission tied at 0-0. The Banana Slugs outshot the Boxers 5-4 and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In the second half, the Banana Slugs had the offensive momentum as they had eleven shots in the second half. The Banana Slugs and the Boxers would be even until 18:04 left in the match. At that mark, Emily Vanasse would score her first goal of the season on a pass from Taylor Keenan to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Banana Slugs. The Banana Slugs would add an insurance goal by Megan Carey with 1:15 left in the match to make the score 2-0.
Vanasse had a match high four shots for the Banana Slugs. The win for the match went to Selina Davila Olivera for the Banana Slugs and the loss went to Kailey Hifumi for Pacific. UC Santa Cruz had a 16-9 advantage in shots while the Boxers had six fewer fouls (10-4) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs' next match is Tuesday as they take on Menlo College in Santa Cruz. Kickoff is set for 3 pm.
