Banana Slugs Finish Seventh in UCSC Invitational

PACIFIC GROVE, CA (March 31st) – The Banana Slugs traveled to the friendly confines of Pacific Grove as they hosted the UCSC Spring Invitational. The event took place at Pacific Grove Golf Links. The Banana Slugs' competition included five NCAA Division III schools and one NAIA school. Against a loaded field, the Banana Slugs put in some of their best performances of the Spring with a seventh place finish.

In the first round, Claire Oetinger had the Banana Slugs' low round of the tournament with an 82 (+10) which tied her with Nicolle Nitta and Kaitlyn Tonai of George Fox University and Kendalyn Ferguson of McMurry University. Mara Anunciacion fired a first round score of 84 (+12) which tied her with Kylee White of McMurry, Nicole Henderson and Anna Kim of Occidental College and Catherine Lott of Pomona Pitzer. Sarah Shi shot an 86 (+14) which tied her along with Madison Tjaden of Ottawa University (AZ). Dana Bryant shot a score of 88 (+16). Kylie Edwards fired a 90 (+18) which tied her along with Katy Uchiyama of Occidental. Jessica Salazar shot a 91 (+19) which tied her with Mikala Hayne, Mary Ester Torres and Maddie Vermillion of McMurry and Kaley Martin of Texas Lutheran University. Maia Dupuis fired a 93 (+21). Angie Yang shot a first round score of 96 (+24). Sean Hong and Marrissa Perez each fired a first round score of 100 (+28). Victoria Morales shot a 103 (+31). Paige Callahan rounded out the Banana Slugs on the day with a 107 (+35).

In the second round, Oetinger had a second round total of 86 (+14) for a total tournament score of 168 (+24) which placed her in a tie for 22nd with Kim and Stephanie Yu of Pomona Pitzer. Anunciocion shot an 88 (+16) for a two round score of 172 (+28) which tied her for 28th. Shi shot a 92 (+20) for a total of 178 (+34) placing her in 33rd place. Edwards fired a 93 (+21) for a tournament score of 183 (+39) which tied her for 36th . Salazar shot a 94 (+22) in the second round for a total score of 185 (+41) which placed her in 38th. Bryant shot a 99 (+27) in the second round for a tournament total of 187 (+43) which finished her in 39th. Dupuis fired a second round 98 (+26) for a total score of 191 (+47) which placed her in 40th. Yang shot a second round 100 (+28) and Perez shot a 96 (+24) for a total of 196 (+52) which tied them for 41st with Torres. Hong shot a second round 100 (+28) for a total of 200 (+56) which placed her in 44th. Morales shot a second round score of 104 (+32) for a total score of 207 (+63) for a 45th place finish. Callahan rounded out the Banana Slugs for the tournament with a second round 102 (+30) for a total tournament score of 209 (+65) which placed her in 46th.

"The golf team has very young talent with high aspirations to make UCSC a team in contention at every event," said head coach Paulette Pera. "They know I am counting on them to turn things around."

Rachel Drgastin of George Fox won the individual title with a 3-over-147. George Fox won the team competition for the second-straight year with a team score of 598, sweeping the top five places.

The Banana Slugs will hit the links on April 13th-14th as they will travel to Texas to participate in the American Southwest Conference Women's Golf Championship at Squaw Valley Golf Club in Glen Rose, Texas.
