WHITTIER (2-16) – UC Santa Cruz played their third game of a four game road trip as they took on Whittier College in Whittier. The Poets outscored the Banana Slugs by nine in the fourth quarter and won 60-51.
In the first quarter, the Poets would start the game on a 10-2 run capped by a Teani White layup with 5:27 left in the quarter. The closest the Banana Slugs would come in the quarter would be five, at 15-10, on an Emily Mitchell three pointer with 3:33 left. The Poets led 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Banana Slugs get their way back into the ballgame. The Banana Slugs would start the quarter on a 14-2 run, capped by a pair of Aubrey Wagner free throws with 2:28 left in the half, to gain their largest lead of the half at five at 27-22. The Poets would go on a 6-0 quarter-ending run, capped by a Zaria Branch jumper with nineteen seconds left in the half, to take the lead at 28-27.
In the third quarter, the Banana Slugs would start the quarter on an 9-0 run, capped by an Ashley Kowack three pointer with 5:10 left in the quarter, to give them their largest lead of the ballgame at 36-28. The Poets would go on an 8-0 run over the next 2:49 of clock time, capped by Kellie Ogata free throw, to tie the game at 36-36. The two teams were tied at 36-36 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Poets would start the quarter on a 14-2 run, capped by a White jumper, to give the Poets the lead for good at 50-38. The Poets would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at fourteen, at 55-41, on a Cali Cubel jumper with 3:29 left. The Banana Slugs would come as close as six, at 55-49, on a Kowack three pointer with 1:12 left.
Kowack had a game high seventeen points. Cubel had fifteen points for the Poets. Kaylee Murphy had ten and Emily Mitchell had eight in the loss. White had fourteen points and Branch and Mia Maglinte had six points apiece for the Poets.
The Banana Slugs shot 29.1% (16-55) from the field, 16.1% (5-31) from the three-point line and were 66.7% (14-21) from the free throw line. The Poets shot 35.6% (21-59) from the field, 26.7% (4-15) from the three-point line and 53.8% (14-26) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced nineteen Poets turnovers scoring nineteen points off the turnovers while the Poets' defense forced twenty-six turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring twenty-four points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Whittier 45-36 while the Poets had eight more points in the paint (24-16) than did the Banana Slugs.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be tomorrow as they take on NCCAA member Bethesda University of California in Monterey Park. Game time is set for 1:30 pm.
