Redhawks hold off UCSC 54-43

SANTA CRUZ- UC Santa Cruz women's basketball team started Sunday's game at the West Field House strong, but ended with a 54 to 43 loss to the Simpson Redhawks in a heated game on Slug territory.

The Slugs fall to 7-13.

CJ Catina scored 11 through 4 field goals including 3 three-pointers and supporting her team by making 2 assists. Jenna Sparks made 3 offensive rebounds and 7 defensive , totaling in at 10 rebounds and successfully made all 6 free throws to finish with 10 points. Senior Kim Tom made 3 three pointers for 9 while Bailey Zazueta made 2 assists and 7 rebounds off the bench. 

Simpson started the first half with 0-4 field goals but the Banana Slugs quickly bounced back when  Tom made a three-pointer.  Catina made a jumper in the last two minutes, but the first half ultimately ended with a 17-22 deficit to the Redhawks.

The second half of the game began with UC Santa Cruz defending home territory as the Redhawks came in hard with 5 lay-ups, one three-pointer, and two free throws, but Catina lowered the deficit  by making two three-pointers with 18 minutes left. UCSC scored 11 points in the first minutes but the Redhawks still led 38-29 at the end of the third. Tom making a three pointer with only 4:34 left on the clock to get UCSC within 10, but the intensely-played game ended with Simpson winning 43-54 as the crowd jumped on their feet with both disbelief and excitement.

UC Santa Cruz's women's basketball team will play their Senior Day against Bethesda University Friday at 6:00 pm at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in downtown Santa Cruz.
