Warriors Spear Banana Slugs

ROCKLIN (2-14) – UC Santa Cruz played their final road game of the regular season as they took on NAIA member William Jessup University in Rocklin. The Warriors' defense held the Banana Slugs to just under 28% shooting and defeated the Banana Slugs 60-54.

In their last game, the Banana Slugs won 59-43 over NCCAA member Bethesda University of California in Mission Viejo on Saturday while the Warriors lost 61-54 to San Diego Christian College on Saturday.

In the first quarter, the Warriors would score the first four points of the ballgame. The Banana Slugs would respond with an 8-0 run to give the Banana Slugs an 8-4 lead with 4:38 left in the quarter. Four points would be the largest lead of the quarter for the Banana Slugs. The Warriors would end the quarter on a 6-0 run, capped by a Janelle Luu free throw with 1:58 left in the quarter, to give the Warriors a 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the teams would continue their back and forth pace. The largest lead of the quarter for both teams was three. The Banana Slugs' three point lead would come at 18-15 on a Michelle Poole layup with 7:09 left in the half. The Warriors' three point lead would come on two occasions; the second occasion was at 23-20 on a pair of Lily Hagerty free throws with 1:51 left in the half. The two teams were tied 23-23 at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the back and forth pace would continue. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the ballgame at six, at 35-29, on a Sonya Ivanovic jumper with 4:58 left in the quarter. The Warriors would respond with an 11-3 run, capped by a Janelle Luu layup with thirty nine seconds left in the quarter, to give the Warriors the lead for good at 41-38. The Warriors led 44-40 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Warriors would expand their lead. The Warriors would gain their largest lead at ten, at 54-44, on an Emilee VanDyke layup with 5:09 left. The Banana Slugs would come as close as four on two occasions; the second occasion was at 58-54 on a Poole free throw with five seconds left. The loss stopped the Banana Slugs' winning streak at four.

Jenna Sparks had fifteen points to lead the Banana Slugs. Olivia Luu had a game high sixteen points for the Warriors. Poole had fourteen and Tyler Stewart had eight points in the loss. Sara Vasquez had thirteen points and Lily Hagerty and Janelle Luu, off the bench, had nine points.

The Banana Slugs shot 27.5% (19-69) from the field, 14.7% (5-34) from the three-point line and were 73.3% (11-15) from the free throw line. The Warriors shot 41.5% (22-53) from the field, 43.8% (7-16) from the three-point line and 81.8% (9-11) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced fourteen Warrior turnovers scoring eleven points off the turnovers while the Warriors' defense forced eleven turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring ten points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded William Jessup 42-40 while the Warriors had eight more points in the paint (24-16) than did the Banana Slugs.

The next game for the Banana Slugs is Friday as they take on NCCAA member Bethesda University of California at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Tip off is set for 6 pm.
