MISSION VIEJO (2-11) – UC Santa Cruz started their final road trip of the regular season as they took on NCCAA member Bethesda University of California in Mission Viejo. The Banana Slugs' defense held the Flames to just over 30% shooting and the Banana Slugs won 59-43.
In the first quarter, the Flames would hold the Banana Slugs to eight points as Flames led 12-8 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the defensive tone of the game would continue as the Banana Slugs held the hosts to only eight points. The Banana Slugs trailed 20-15 at the halftime intermission. In the third quarter, the Banana Slugs would have a strong offensive presence and would score double the points (24-12) than the Flames would have. The Banana Slugs led 39-32 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Banana Slugs offensive prowess would continue as they scored twenty points in the quarter. The win marked the Banana Slugs' fourth in a row which matched their longest winning streak of the season.
Tyler Stewart had a game high eighteen points to lead the Banana Slugs. Adelina Vanaga had thirteen points for the Flames. Michelle Poole had eleven and Katie Young had ten points in the win. Victoria Jackson and Taylor Smalley both had eight for the Flames.
The Banana Slugs shot 37.7% (23-61) from the field, 25% (5-20) from the three-point line and were 61.5% (8-13) from the free throw line. The Flames shot 30.9% (17-55) from the field, 27.8% (5-18) from the three-point line and 61.5% (8-13) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced ten Flame turnovers while the Flames' defense forced nine turnovers by UC Santa Cruz. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Bethesda 42-35.
The next game for the Banana Slugs is Tuesday as they take on NAIA member William Jessup University in Rocklin. Tip off is set for 5:30 pm.
