CLAREMONT (11-26) –UC Santa Cruz wrapped up their time in Southern California and their four-game road trip as they took on Claremont Mudd Scripps. The Stags defeated Banana Slugs 76-51.
Both teams won their last game. UC Santa Cruz won 83-55 over Pomona-Pitzer yesterday in Pomona while the Athens defeated Carleton College 65-37 yesterday in Claremont.
In the first quarter, the Banana Slugs scored the first basket of the game on a Jenna Sparks layup with 8:56 left in the quarter. The two point lead for the Banana Slugs was their largest of the ballgame. The Athenas took the lead for good, at 4-2, on a Jai Dungca layup with 8:20 left in the quarter. The Athenas gained their largest lead of the quarter at eight, at 19-11, on a Corinne Bogle jumper with forty-eight seconds. The Athenas led 19-11 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Banana Slugs would get back into the game. The Athenas took their largest lead of the quarter at eight, at 21-13, on an Ellery Koelker-Wolff layup with 9:24 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 13-4 run, capped by a Jasmin Dimson free throw with 2:35 left in the half, to take the lead at 26-25. The Athenas would finish the half on a 6-2 spurt capped by a Kailee Severt layup with thirty-eight seconds left, to take the lead for good at 31-28. The Stags led at halftime 31-28.
In the third quarter, the Stags would expand on their lead. The Banana Slugs would come as close as two, at 31-29, on a Michelle Poole free throw with 9:29 left in the quarter. The Stags would gain a double-digit lead at twelve, at 44-32, on a Kiki Yang three pointer with 5:24 left in the quarter. The largest lead of the quarter for the Stags came at seventeen, at 49-32, on a Corinne Bogle jumper with fifty-five seconds left in the quarter. The Stags led 50-34 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Stags would hold the Banana Slugs at arms' length. The closest the Banana Slugs would come would be eleven on two occasions; the second occasion at 55-44 on a Sparks free throw with 6:56 left. The Athenas gained their largest lead of the ballgame at twenty-five, at 76-51, on a Lindsey Cleary free throw with twenty-five seconds left.
Sparks had thirteen points to lead the Banana Slugs. Severt had a game high twenty-one points for the Athenas. Jasmine Dimson and Michelle Poole had nine points apiece in the loss. Kris Brackmann had fifteen points and Dungca had fourteen points for the Athenas.
The Banana Slugs shot 34.9% (15-43) from the field, 18.2% (4-22) from the three-point line and was 85% (17-20) from the free throw line. The Athenas shot 55.6% (30-54) from the field, 47.1% (8-17) from the three-point line and 72.7% (8-11) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced thirteen Athena turnovers scoring eleven points off the turnovers while the Athenas' defense forced eighteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring twenty-one points off the turnovers. Claremont Mudd Scripps outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 35-20 and the Stags had thirteen more points off the bench (22-9) than did UC Santa Cruz.
The Banana Slugs will now come home for two games. They will tip off the UCSC Holiday Classic on Friday as they take on University of La Verne at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Tip off is set for 6 pm.
