SANTA CRUZ (11-28) – The Banana Slugs took on USA Today NCAA Division III #2 George Fox University in the fourth game of the UCSC Thanksgiving Tournament. The Bruins got out to a double digit lead in the first quarter and won going away 78-60.
In their last contest, UC Santa Cruz lost 62-54 to Austin College yesterday in Santa Cruz and George Fox won 62-55 over University of Redlands in Santa Cruz yesterday.
In the first quarter, the Bruins would start the game on a 7-1 run, capped by a Kaycee Creech thee pointer with 7:25 left in the quarter. The Bruins would gain their largest lead of the quarter at twelve, at 18-6, on a Kaitlin Jamieson jumper with 2:49 left. Kim Tom would make two baskets before the end of the quarter to cut the Bruins' lead to 18-10 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Bruins would go on a 5-0 run, capped by a Kim Frost layup with 8:56 left, to make the score 23-10. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 7-1 run, capped by a Madison Van Zandt jumper with 6:01 remaining in the half, to make the score 24-17. From there, the Bruins would go on a 14-5 half-ending run. The Bruins led 39-22 at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Bruins would continue to expand upon their lead. A pair of Justine Benner free throws would give the Bruins a sixteen point lead, at 40-24, with 9:02 left in the quarter. On their next possession, the Banana Slugs would trim the Bruins' lead to fourteen, at 40-26, with 7:34 left. Over the next four minutes, the Bruins would go on an 11-1 run, capped by a Kelsey Kammerzell free throw, to make the score 51-27 with 3:30 left in the quarter. The Bruins would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at twenty five, at 56-31, on a Nicole Blizzard three pointer with 1:27 left. The Bruins led 56-33 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Banana Slugs would cut into the Bruins' lead. The Banana Slugs would come as close as thirteen, at 69-56, on a Tyler Stewart jumper with 2:53 left in the game. The Bruins would win 78-60.
Stewart had fifteen points to lead the Banana Slugs. Sammy Naluai had a game high twenty one points for the Bruins. Sparks had nine points in the loss. Benner had thirteen and Kaitlin Jamieson had ten for the Bruins.
The Banana Slugs shot 40.7% (22-54) from the field, 42.9% (6-14) from the three point line and was 55.6% (10-18) from the free throw line. The Bruins shot 39.3% (24-61) from the field, 58.8% (10-17) from the three point line and 64.5% (20-31) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced eighteen Bruin turnovers scoring twelve points off the turnovers while the Bruins' defense forced twenty five turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring twenty four points off the turnovers. George Fox outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 41-38 while the Banana Slugs had eighteen more bench points (42-24) than did the Bruins.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be Friday as they take on Colorado College at West Field House. Tip off is set for 5 pm.
