SANTA CRUZ (11-27) – The Banana Slugs took on Austin College in the second game of the UCSC Thanksgiving Tournament. The Roos came back from a nine point deficit to defeat the Banana Slugs 62-54.
Both teams won their last contest. UC Santa Cruz won 59-56 over Augustana College on Sunday in Santa Cruz and Austin won 76-68 over Millsaps College in Shreveport on Sunday.
For the first half of the first quarter, the two teams would trade baskets. Ashley Holmes would hit a three pointer with 5:48 left in the quarter to give the Banana Slugs a 12-10 lead. The Banana Slugs' lead would expand to seven, at 17-10, on a Tyler Stewart three pointer with 3:57 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would lead 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Banana Slugs would expand their lead and would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at nine, at 24-15, on a Katherine Mauldin jumper with 6:13 left in the half. From there, the Roos would outscore the Banana Slugs 15-7 during the remainder of the quarter. The Banana Slugs led 31-30 at the halftime intermission.
In the third quarter, the Banana Slugs would expand their lead to two, at 34-32, on a Trina Torres free throw with 8:15 left in the quarter. The Roos would gain the lead for good, at 37-36, on a Kendall Heitmeier jumper with 6:11 left in the quarter. The Roos would gain their largest lead of the quarter at nine, at 45-36, after a pair of Kelly Lynch free throws with twenty seven seconds left in the quarter. The Roos led 45-38 after three quarters of play.
In the fourth quarter, the Roos would continue to add onto their lead. The Roos would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at thirteen, at 52-39, with 7:38 left on a Heitmeier free throw. The Banana Slugs would go on a 8-0 run, capped by a Lashay Alexander jumper with 4:55 remaining, to make the score 52-47 in favor of the Roos. The Roos would hold off the Banana Slugs and won 62-54.
Holmes had a game high sixteen points to lead the Banana Slugs. Bryce Frank had fourteen points for the Roos. Michelle Poole and Kim Tom both had seven points in the loss. Heitmeier had twelve and Brianna Harvey had eleven for the Roos.
The Banana Slugs shot 30.2% (19-63) from the field, 22.7% (5-22) from the three point line and was 61.1% (11-18) from the free throw line. The Roos shot 33.3% (24-72) from the field, 26.7% (4-15) from the three point line and 66.7% (10-15) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced twenty one Roo turnovers scoring six points off the turnovers while the Roos' defense forced twenty turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring twelve points off the turnovers. Austin outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 56-41 and had four more assists (13-9) than did the Banana Slugs.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be tomorrow as they take on George Fox University at West Field House. Tip off is set for 5 pm.
