Cobbers Husk Banana Slugs in Home Opener

SANTA CRUZ (11-21) – The Banana Slugs opened their home schedule as they took on Concordia College (Minnesota). The Cobbers came from fourteen down in the second half to win 70-65.

In their last contest. UC Santa Cruz won 65-57 over Occidental College on Sunday in Los Angeles and Concordia lost 62-58 to Augustana College in Santa Cruz yesterday.

In the first quarter, the Cobbers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 7:11 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would get back into the game and would take the lead at 6-4, with 5:43 left, on a Kim Tom three pointer. The two teams would trade baskets for the next few minutes of clock time. Olivia Johnson would give the Cobbers a 14-11 lead with 2:47 left in the quarter. The Cobbers would outscore the Banana Slugs 4-2 over the remaining minutes of the quarter to take an 18-13 lead after the first quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the Banana Slugs would start the quarter on a 14-2 run, capped by a Tyler Stewart layup with 5:52 left in the half, to give the Banana Slugs a 27-20 lead. The Banana Slugs would expand their lead to double digits, at 35-25, on a Tom jump shot with 1:04 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would lead 37-25 at the halftime intermission.   

In the third quarter, the Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at fourteen, at 39-25, on an Ashley Holmes jumper with 9:56 left in the quarter. The Cobbers would go on a 9-0 run, capped by a Crystal Amundson jumper, to make the score 39-34 with 5:34 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would expand their lead to nine, at 45-36, on a Trina Torres layup with 3:04 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs led 50-43 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Cobbers would start with a 5-0 run, capped by a Katie Rosenfeldt three pointer, cutting the Banana Slugs lead to 50-48 with 8:38 left. The Cobbers took the lead for good, at 58-57, on a Kirstin Simmons jumper with 5:01 left. The Cobbers would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at six, at 65-59, on a pair of Jenna Januschka free throws with 1:30 left. The Banana Slugs would trim the Cobbers lead to three, at 68-65, on a Lashay Alexander free throw with twenty one seconds left. Greta Walsh would add two free throws for the Cobbers with twenty seconds left to give the Cobbers a 70-65 lead. The Cobbers won 70-65.

Ashley Holmes had eleven points to lead the Banana Slugs. Johnson had a game high seventeen points for the Cobbers. Trina Torres had a double double with ten points and a game high ten rebounds and Katie Young had ten points in the loss. Januschka had fifteen and Walsh had fourteen for the Cobbers.

The Banana Slugs shot 40.9% (27-66) from the field, 33.3% (7-21) from the three point line and was 80% (4-5) from the free throw line. The Cobbers shot 40.7% (24-59) from the field, 30% (6-20) from the three point line and 88.9% (16-18) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced twenty Cobber turnovers scoring thirteen points off the turnovers while the Cobbers' defense forced seventeen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring thirteen points off the turnovers. Concordia outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 41-35 but the Banana Slugs had thirteen more points off the bench (26-13) than did the Cobbers.

The next game for the Banana Slugs will be tomorrow as they take on Augustana College at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz. Tip off is set for 11 am.
