SANTA CRUZ, CA -- UC Santa Cruz built a commanding 18 point lead but had to survived a late rally by the Puget Sound Loggers to complete a 66-56 win and a weekend sweep of the Hampton Inn Tournament. The Slugs improved their early season record to 3-0 behind 18 points and 8 rebounds from Sarah Mackey, 17 points and 12 rebounds from Leah Parrish and 14 points from Ryanne Ortiz.
The Slugs raced to an early 14-6 lead behind 8 quick points by Ortiz. The lead ballooned to 36-18 on bookend 3 pointers by Geena Giovannetti and Parrish which framed a 24-8 Slug run. The assist of the night belonged to Sarah Crane who made a 15 foot one hand bounce pass to Mackey who finished the layup. Parrish converted a driving lay-up in traffic and the Slugs led 38-20 at intermission.
The first 15 minutes of the second half were controlled by the Slugs. Whenever the Loggers made a run the Slugs would respond. The lead fluctuated between fourteen to nineteen points for most of the half. Mackey put one dagger into the Loggers draining a desperation 3 pointer as the shoot clock expired. The Slugs led 62-44 with 3:30 remaining and the game appeared to be over. The Loggers never quit, mounted an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 62-52 and added a few grey hairs to Coach Kent. The Slugs righted the ship on 4 consecutive free throws by Ortiz and Parrish and sealed the Loggers fate.
The Slugs continue play at home on Friday November 22 5:30pm vs Whitman College.
