School record by Marquardt highlights track's season debut in Turlock

TURLOCK - Natalie Marquardt set a new school record in the 400 meters as UC Santa Cruz's track squad opened their 2019 season on Saturday at the Kim Duyst Invite hosted by Stanislaus State.

Marquardt, a senior from Morro Bay, placed third in 1:00.63. She was .05 faster than the school mark set by Sydney Gutierrez two years ago in Sacramento.

Freshman Sophia Llamas Cervantes was 7th in 1:02.11.

Other standouts on the women's side were Anya Hynell-Cooper placing second in the 5000 meters in 19:24.30, sophomore Melanie Wong hitting a PR in the 100 in 13.55 to place 23rd and senior Raissa Boysen running  a 2:21.26 in the 800 to finish 6th.

Freshmen Zoe Johnson, Chidinma Nwokocha and Nadia Perez along with Wong finished fifth in the 4x400 relay in 4:08.68.

Highlights on the men's side had Paul Colosi and Nick Kleiber finish 6-7  in the 5000, with Colosi finishing in 15:23.78 and Kleiber .01 seconds after.

Kleiber, the school record holder in the 1500m, finished 3rd in 4:02.75 while Colosi was 6th in 4:04.49. Perry Winsor was 5th in the 800 in 1:59.84 followed by Solomon Reinman in 6th at 2:00.33.

Christopher Lee, a freshman in his first college meet, placed 8th in the Pole Vault at 3.95 meters (12 feet, 11.4 in).
