School record by Marquardt highlights track's season debut in Turlock

TURLOCK - Natalie Marquardt set a new school record in the 400 meters as UC Santa Cruz's track squad opened their 2019 season on Saturday.

Marquardt, a senior from Morro Bay, placed third at the Kim Duyst Invite hosted by Stanislaus State. She was .05 faster than the school mark set by Sydney Gutierrez two years ago in Sacramento.

Freshman Sophia Llamas Cervantes was 7th in 1:02.11.

Other standouts on the women's side were Anya Hynell-Cooper placing second in the 5000 meters in 19:24.30, sophomore Melanie Wong hitting a PR in the 100 in 13.55 to place 23rd and senior Raissa Boysen running  a 2:21.26 in the 800 to finish 6th.

Freshmen Zoe Johnson, Chidinma Nwokocha and Nadia Perez along with Wong finished fifth in the 4x400 relay in 4:08.68.

Highlights on the men's side had Paul Colosi and Nick Kleiber finish 6-7  in the 5000, with Colosi finishing in 15:23.78 and Kleiber .01 seconds after.

Kleiber, the school record holder in the 1500m, finished 3rd in 4:02.75 while Colosi was 6th in 4:04.49. Perry Winsor was 5th in the 800 in 1:59.84 followed by Solomon Reinman in 6th at 2:00.33.

Christopher Lee, a freshman in his first college meet, placed 8th in the Pole Vault at 3.95 meters (12 feet, 11.4 in).
