SAN FRANCISCO (2-27) – UC Santa Cruz went to San Francisco to take part in the Johnny Mathis Invitational. The event took place at Cox Stadium and was hosted by San Francisco State University. The Slugs' competition included several NCAA schools and several junior college and running clubs.
In the men's competition, Damiano Garrioli led the Slugs to victory with a first place finish in the pole vault. In the 800 meter dash, Takehiro Yamaya finished ninth with a time of 2:02.91, Tommy Smail finished twenty fourth with a time of 2:12.33 and Liam Dugard finished twenty ninth with a time of 2:24.98. In the 1500 meter run, Yamaya finished eighteenth with a time of 4:11.14, Smail finished twenty eighth with a time of 4:20.54 and Dugard finished fifty first with a time of 4:42.27.
In the women's competition, Nancy Alvarado-Zavaleta finished nineteenth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.07. In the 800 meter run, Sydney Gutierrez finished tenth with a time of 2:24.78, Raissa Boysen finished thirteenth with a time of 2:27.07, Autumn Burton finished fourteenth with a time of 2:28.15, Lizzie Meredith finished twenty fourth with a time of 2:36.59, Isabelle Panza finished thirty first with a time of 2:50.67 and Casey Chien finished thirty second with a time of 2:55.95. In the 1500 meter run, Burton finished fifteenth with a time of 4:55.48, Sydney Gutierrez finished twenty third with a time of 5:02.52, Boysen finished twenty fourth with a time of 5:03.36, Meredith finished thirty third with a time of 5:10.29, Jamie West finished forty first with a time of 5:18.81, Panza finished forty ninth with a time of 5:28.55 and Sophia Mahoney finished fifty first with a time of 5:37.97. In the 5000 meter run, Shannon McClish finished sixteenth with a time of 19:50.75. In the 4 x 400 meter relay, the Banana Slugs finished fourth with a time of 4:20.91. In the women's triple jump, Alvarado-Zavaleta finished sixth with a distance of 9.64 meters.
In the men's team competition, the Banana Slugs finished sixth as Stanislaus State finished first. In the women's team competition, the Banana Slugs finished seventh as San Francisco State finished first.
The Banana Slugs will have their next meet next Saturday as they take part in the Kim Duyst Invitational in Sacramento.
