Divers, relays highlight great weekend for swimming at Slug Invitational

SANTA CRUZ - UC Santa Cruz's swim teams closed a great weekend against Cal Lutheran and the Slug Invitational. 

The women defeated Cal Lutheran 1165 to 876, while the men were edged by the Kingsmen 1085-1067.

"Women really stood out today/yesterday. Men had some great swims and multiple season bests/PRs," said head coach Matthew Nauman.

Sophomore Diver Ethan Johnson scored 277.90 in the men's 3 meter event, eight points off provisional qualification for the NCAA West regional. Janine Grgurina swept both the women's 1 meter and 3 meter Diving events against the Regals' Abigail Hiller.

"Ethan scored some excellent scores on dives with a high degree of difficulty!" said Nauman. "To qualify, there is work left to do, but we are ok with the result today.

Other standouts included the Men's 200 medley relay of Jack Schertler, Daniel Choy, Victor Sowa, and Vernon Wetzell. The 800 free relay of Sowa, Paul Ogle-Sporer, Aaron Wood and Christian Leon also won in 7:21.36. Leon also won the 100 free while Wetzell won the 50 free.
Schertler won the 200 IM in 4:24.54. Sowa was 2nd in the 100 fly in 54.71.
Daniel Choy had his season-best in 100 &  200 breaststroke and 200 IM, same as conference last year.
On the women's side, Kenya Lam won 100 fly and 200 IM and was second in both the 200 breaststroke and 100 back. Ryan Springer Carter won the 100 Free on Friday in 57:30, followed by Mirelle Augst and Lael Proffit in a 1-2-3 sweep  to help win the meet. Springer Carter also won the 50 Free Saturday in 24.84.
Meghan Burr, Lam and Elisabeth Lundgren went 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke.
The Women's relays all swept while Lael Proffit, Paris Sinclair and Mirelle Augst also finished 1-2-3 in the 1650 yard free.
 
The Banana Slugs' next meet is in one month when they return the home-and-home by participating in the Chris Knorr Invitational at Cal Lutheran.
