SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The UCSC women's swimming and diving team hosted NCAA Division II Azusa Pacific, NCAA Division I #18 San Jose State, as well as Cal Lutheran over the weekend. The men had a dual-meet with Cal Lutheran.
In the first day, the UCSC women had a dual meet with Azusa Pacific. The Slugs had participants finish in the top five in all sixteen events. Individually, Kiara Calayag won two events (100 and 200 Back) and Jenna Riley won one event (100 Breast). The Slugs also won the 200 Medley Relay.
The Cougars won the team competition 192-102.
Later that day, the women participated in a tri-meet against San Jose. Despite facing strong competition, the women finished with 22 top-5 finishes on the day, highlighted by first place finishes by Amanda Gritsfield in 3 meter diving with 199.50 points and Jenna Riley in the 100 yard Breast (1:12.22). Other strong performances included Kiara Calayag in the 100 Back (1:02.60) and Kelly Henderson in the 500 Free (5:24.5).
The men had a lot of success both as a team and individually in their dual meet against Cal Lutheran. The men won 4 events including Cameron Braun in the 200 Free (1:47.53), Ivan Garin in the 50 Free (21.89), Kenny Doo in the 100 Free (49.37), and Casey Colella in the 100 Breast (1:00.43). The men also posted 29 top-3 finishes helping the Slugs to a team win.
On Sunday, both the men's and women's teams competed again in a dual meet against Cal Lutheran. The Slugs were able to swim their way to a sweep as the women's team won 144-119 while the men's team won 155-125.
The women started out strong in the first event as Calayag, Arnold, Hager, and Springer-Carter won the 200 Medley Relay (157.14). Springer-Carter also won the 100 Free (55.68). Other strong individual performances came from Henderson winning the 1000 Free (11:08.73) and 500 Free (5:26.03), Riley winning the 100 Breast (1:10.19) and 200 Breast (2:33.49), and Grisfeld who won both the 1 Meter Dive (195.80) and 3 Meter Dive (198.35).
The men had strong performances from Cameron Braun, Casey Colella, and Tyler Andree. Braun won both the 200 Free (1:47.04) and 100 Free (47.81). Colella won the 100 Breast (1:00.11) and 200 Breast (2:11.98). Andree also had wins in the 500 Free (4:55.83) and 400 IM (4:17.07).
UCSC returns to action with the CSU East Bay Christmas Invitational, Dec. 17-19, at the Quinn Aquatic Center in Santa Rosa, Calif.
