LEXINGTON, KY - Junior Middle Hitter Raymond Cascio was named the Sports Imports/Division III National Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. He is the first Slug to earn a POTW award this season and tenth all-time.
The junior from Pittsburgh hit .667 in the Slugs' four wins last weekend, tallying 43 kills on 60 swings with just three errors. On Friday night against UC Merced, he broke Dane Gilliam's 13-year-old school record by hitting .783 on a career-high 18 kills in the four-set victory.
"Ray is a pivotal piece for our offense and defense, and it's fantastic that he's gaining recognition where credit is due," said head coach Paul Leon.
For the year, Cascio is hitting a team-high .417, as well as being the team leader with 26 solo blocks and 85 assisted. He ranks seventh nationally in hit percentage and is 18th in blocks per set.
"He elevates his level of playing in practice and has grown into this role in our program," Leon continued. "He's already building excitement for his senior year on where he can go with his talent."
