Banana Slugs Sweep Raiders

ROCHESTER (2-4) – The Banana Slugs played their final match of the Golden Flyer Invitational as they took on NCAA Division III #14 Rivier University in Rochester. The Banana Slugs had over a .300 hitting percentage and swept the Raiders 3-0. 

In their last match, the Banana Slugs won 3-1 over NCAA Division III #10(t) Nazareth College earlier today in Rochester while the Raiders lost 3-0 to NCAA Division III #2 SUNY New Paltz in Rochester earlier today.

In the first set, the two teams would trade points for the first twelve serves of the set. The Banana Slugs took the lead at 7-6 on a Raymond Cascio kill. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at thirteen, at 23-10, on a Kyle Donohue kill. The Banana Slugs would win the first set 25-14 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, as with the first set, the two teams would trade points to start the set. The Banana Slugs took the lead for good at 3-2 on a Jake Howard kill. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at eight on six different occasions; the sixth occasion at 23-15 on a Donohue kill. The Banana Slugs would win the second set 25-19 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Raiders would start the set on a 7-3 spurt capped by a service ace. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good at 13-12 on a Shad Harris kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at four on three occasions; the third occasion at 23-19 on a Justin Fortner kill. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-23 and won the match 3-0 for their fourth consecutive victory.

For UC Santa Cruz, Howard had ten kills and for Rivier, Grant Andler had eleven kills. Ryan McLaughlin had a match high thirty nine assists for UC Santa Cruz and Matt Lasance had twenty five for Nazareth. Jonathan Santos led the Banana Slugs had a match high ten digs and Garrett Bucklin and Ian Wolski had six digs apiece for the Raiders.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .302 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .357 while Rivier had a .153 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .257. The Banana Slugs had two fewer service aces (5-3) than did the Raiders.

The Banana Slugs will have their next match on Saturday as they take on California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks at 4 pm.
