ROCHESTER (2-4) – The Banana Slugs played their first match of the day at the Golden Flyer Invitational as they took on the host and NCAA Division III #10(t) Nazareth College. The Banana Slugs' defense held the Golden Flyers to just over a .100 hitting percentage and won 3-1.

Both teams won their last match. The Banana Slugs won 3-0 over Elmira College yesterday in Rochester while the Golden Flyers won 3-0 over Johnson and Wales University (RI) earlier today in Rochester.

In the first set, the two teams would trade points, and the lead, for the first eight serves of the set. The Banana Slugs would take the lead, at 5-4, on a service ace. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at three on two occasions; the second occasion at 17-14 on a Golden Flyers' attack error. The Golden Flyers would respond with an 8-1 run, capped by a Banana Slugs' attack error, to gain the lead for good at 22-18. The Golden Flyers would gain their largest lead of the set at six, at set point, on a service ace. The Golden Flyers won the first set 25-19 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Banana Slugs would never trail in the set and started the set by scoring the first four points. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the game at ten on three different occasions; the third occasion at set point on a Jake Howard kill. The Banana Slugs would win the second set 25-15 and tied the match at 1-1.

In the third set, the two teams would trade points, and the lead, for the first twelve serves. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good, at 7-6, on a Lake Merchen kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at five on two different occasions; the second occasion at 23-18 on a Raymond Cascio kill. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-23 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, the Banana Slugs would start the set on a 9-5 spurt capped by a Golden Flyers' attack error. The Golden Flyers would respond with a 6-1 run, capped by a Banana Slugs' bad set, to take the lead at 11-10. The Golden Flyers would gain their largest lead of the set at three, at 16-13, on a Tyler Farnung kill. The Banana Slugs would respond with a 6-0 run, capped by a Golden Flyers' attack error, to take the lead for good at 19-16. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at five, at 23-18, on a Merchen kill. The Banana Slugs won the fourth set 25-21 and won the match 3-1 for their third consecutive victory.

For UC Santa Cruz, Merchen had a match high seventeen kills and for Nazareth, Zachary Gillard had eight kills. Ryan McLaughlin had a match high thirty seven assists for UC Santa Cruz and Kemp had thirty two for Nazareth. Cameron Bardeau and McLaughlin led the Banana Slugs had a match high twelve digs apiece and Luis Vazquez had ten digs for the Golden Flyers.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .214 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the fourth set at .355 while Nazareth had a .103 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .212. The Banana Slugs had three more service aces (7-4) than did the Golden Flyers.

The Banana Slugs will have their next match in about thirty minutes as they take on NCAA Division III #14 Rivier University at 2 pm in Rochester.
