Bates and Reyes Enjoy Win on Senior Night

SANTA CRUZ (4-1) – The NCAA Division III #6 Banana Slugs celebrated Senior Night as they celebrated seniors Justin Bates and Jorge Reyes and took on California Lutheran University at West Field House. The Banana Slugs held the Kingsmen to a hitting percentage below .070 as the Banana Slugs defeated the Kingsmen 3-1.

These two teams have played three previous matches. The Banana Slugs had won all three previous matches against the Kingsmen with two coming in Thousand Oaks and one occurring in Santa Cruz. In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 3-1 to NAIA member Hope International University in Fullerton on March 23rd while the Kingsmen won 3-2 over SUNY Polytechnic on March 21st in Marcy.

In the first set, the two teams would trade points through the first eight serves. The Banana Slugs would take the lead, at 5-4, on a Kingsmen service error. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at four, at 9-5, on a Kingsmen attack error. The Kingsmen would get back into the set and took the lead for good, at 14-13, on a Kristian Gallardo kill. The Kingsmen would gain their largest lead of the set at three on three separate occasions; the third occasion was at 18-15 on a Hunter Horn kill. The Banana Slugs would tie the set on three occasions; the third occasion was at 22-22 on a Kingsmen attack error. The Kingsmen would score the final three points of the set to win the first set 25-22 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 5-1 spurt capped by a Kingsmen attack error. The closest the Kingsmen would come as close as one on two separate occasions; the second occasion was at 9-8 on a ball handling error by the Banana Slugs. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 13-2 run capped by a Kingsmen attack error to take their largest lead of the set at twelve at 22-10. The Banana Slugs would go on to win the second set 25-15 and tied the match at 1-1.

In the third set, the Kingsmen would start the set on a 6-1 run capped by a Horn kill. The Banana Slugs would respond with a 9-3 run of their own, capped by a service ace, to take the lead at 10-9. The two teams would trade points for the next seven serves. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good at 19-18 on a Lake Merchen kill. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at four on two different occasions; the second occasion at set point on a Jorge Reyes kill. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-21 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, the Kingsmen would start the set on a 11-4 run capped by a Banana Slugs' attack error. The seven-point lead was the largest of the set for the Kingsmen. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 14-6 run, capped by a Gino Gamboa kill, to give them the lead at 18-17. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at three, at 22-19, on a Kingsmen attack error. The Kingsmen would tie the set at 22-22 on a Horn kill. The Banana Slugs would gain the lead for good, at 23-22, on a service error by the Kingsmen. The Banana Slugs won the fourth set 25-23 and won the match 25-23.

For UC Santa Cruz, Lake Merchen had a match high eighteen kills and for California Lutheran, Justin Kam had nine kills. Ryan McLaughlin had seventeen assists for UC Santa Cruz and Nick Shoemate had a match high twenty eight for California Lutheran. Cameron Bardeau led the Banana Slugs with a match high twelve digs and Nick Shoemate had eleven digs for the Kingsmen.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .190 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the fourth set at .286 while California Lutheran had a .070 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the fourth set at .188. The Banana Slugs had twelve more assists (45-33) than did the Kingsmen.

The Banana Slugs will now wait to hear whether they will advance to the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championships. The selection show is scheduled for April 11th.
