Banana Slugs Sweep Spartans to End Regular Season

 ELMIRA, NY -- UC Santa Cruz played their final match of their five match trip to the state of New York as they took on D'Youville College. The Banana Slugs hit one of their best percentages of the season and swept the Spartans 3-0. 

The Banana Slugs were coming off a 3-1 win over Elmira College earlier today in Elmira while the Spartans were coming off a 3-0 loss to Baruch College in Elmira earlier today.

In the first set, the Banana Slugs had five more kills than did the Spartans as they led wire-to-wire. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-19 and took a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the Banana Slugs' defense was the story as the Banana Slugs forced seven errors by the Spartans. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-19 and led the match 2-0. In the third set, the Banana Slugs had double the number of kills than did the Spartans (16-7). The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-18 and won the match 3-0. 

For UC Santa Cruz, Riley Rutan had fourteen kills and for D'Youville, Brock Tetreault had a match high sixteen kills. Rutan led the Banana Slugs with ten digs and Alex Johnson had a match high thirteen digs for the Spartans.  

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .412 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .500 while D'Youville had a .238 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .296. The Banana Slugs had four more service aces (7-3) than did the Spartans 

The Banana Slugs will now have to wait until April 13th when the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship bracket is announced to see when the Banana Slugs will play next.
