ELMIRA, NY -- UC Santa Cruz played their second match of the day at the Soaring Eagle Invitational as they took on SUNY Polytechnic Institute. The Banana Slugs would sweep the Wildcats 3-0.
The Banana Slugs were coming off a 3-1 win over Nazareth College earlier today while the Wildcats were coming off a 3-1 loss to Baruch College earlier today also in Elmira.
In the first set, the Banana Slugs led wire-to-wire. The Banana Slugs committed only two errors in the set as they won the first set 25-18 and led the match 1-0. In the second set, the Banana Slugs would once again control the pace of play as they hit a .333 percentage. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-16 and took a 2-0 match lead. In the third set, the Banana Slugs would, as in the second set, have five errors as they hit nearly .300 for the set. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-16 and won the match 3-0.
For UC Santa Cruz, Jake Landel had a match high eight kills and for SUNY Poly, A.J. Davids and Evan Smith had seven kills apiece. Cameron Bardeau led the Banana Slugs with five digs and Dan O'Connor had six digs apiece for the Wildcats.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .431 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .478 while SUNY Poly had a .093 hitting percentage. The Banana Slugs had over double the kills (41-19) than did the Wildcats.
The Banana Slugs will have two matches tomorrow. The Banana Slugs will have two matches tomorrow as they take on the host Elmira College at 8 am and D'Youville College at 10:30 am.
