#2 Banana Slugs Beat #10 Soaring Eagles 3-1

ELMIRA, NY -- UC Santa Cruz played their first match of the day at the Soaring Eagle Invitational as they took on the host Elmira College. As with their match on February 5th, the Banana Slugs and the Soaring Eagles played a tight match. The Banana Slugs defeated the Soaring Eagles 3-1. 

Both teams were coming off victories in their last match. The Banana Slugs were coming off a 3-0 win over SUNY Polytechnic Institute yesterday in Elmira while the Soaring Eagles were coming off a 3-0 win over D'Youville College in Elmira yesterday.

 In the first set, the Banana Slugs led wire-to-wire. The Banana Slugs committed a lone error in the entire set as the Banana Slugs won the first set 25-12 and took a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the Soaring Eagles forced six errors by the Banana Slugs while hitting their highest percentage of the match. The Soaring Eagles won the second set 25-21 and tied the match at 1-1. In the third set, the two teams played back and forth with the set needing extra serves to decide the outcome. Although the Soaring Eagles had a better hitting percentage than the Banana Slugs for the set, the Banana Slugs won the third set 27-25 and took a 2-1 match lead. In the fourth set, the Banana Slugs gave up one more kill but also forced one more kill. The Banana Slugs won the fourth set 25-23 and won the match 3-1.   

For UC Santa Cruz, Lake Merchen had twelve kills and for Elmira, Erik Griffin had a match high thirteen kills. Jake Hurwitz led the Banana Slugs with ten digs and Rob Shade had a match high thirteen digs for the Soaring Eagles. 

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .204 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .444 while Elmira had a .219 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .346. The Banana Slugs had four more solo blocks (7-3) than did the Soaring Eagles. 

The Banana Slugs will have little time to get ready for their next match as they will take on D'Youville College at 10:30 am.
