Banana Slugs Sweep Medaille to Start Empire State Road Trip

BUFFALO, NY UC Santa Cruz started their five game road trip to the state of New York as they took on Medaille College. These two teams met once before this season in Rochester on February 6th and the result was the same as the Banana Slugs swept the Mavericks 3-0. 

The Banana Slugs were coming off a 3-1 win over Holy Names University in Oakland on Saturday while the Mavericks were coming off a 3-2 loss to Nazareth College on Tuesday in Buffalo. 

In the first set, the Mavericks would take their largest lead of the set of one, at 3-2, on a Jack Hagerty kill. The Banana Slugs would go on a 5-0 run, to take the lead for good in the set, capped by a Mavericks' attack error. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at seven on two occasions; the second occasion at set point on a Mavericks' service error. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-18 and led the match 1-0. 

In the second set, the Mavericks' would get out to their largest lead of the set at two on two occasions; the second occasion at 10-8 on a Hagerty kill. The Banana Slugs would get back into the set and would tie the set at 10-10 on a Jake Howard kill. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good on the next serve on a Mavericks' attack error. The Banana Slugs' largest lead of the set was six on two occasions; the second occasion was at set point on Jake Landel kill. The Banana Slugs would win the second set 25-19 and took a 2-0 match lead. 

The third set started with both teams trading points for the first six serves. The Mavericks would gain their largest lead of the set at three, at 6-3, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Banana Slugs would get their way back into the set and would take the lead for good, at 9-8, on a Jake Howard kill. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at seven, at 22-15, on a Mavericks' attack error. The Banana Slugs would win the third set 25-19 and win the match 3-0. 

For UC Santa Cruz, Landel had a match high ten kills and for Medaille, David Hill had eight kills. Blake Chadwick had a match high twenty eight assists for UC Santa Cruz and David Riggsby had nineteen for Medaille. Chadwick led the Banana Slugs with a match high ten digs and Joe Hacherl, Riggsby and Nate Schneider had eight digs apiece for the Mavericks. 

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .264 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .368 while Medaille had a .044 hitting percentage with the third set having the best percentage at .115. The Banana Slugs had eleven fewer errors (22-11) than did the Mavericks. 

The Banana Slugs will two matches tomorrow as they take part in the Soaring Eagle Invitational in Elmira, New York. The Banana Slugs will take on Nazareth College at 11 am and State University of New York Polytechnic Institute at 5 pm.
