Banana Slugs Sweep Muskies

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- UC Santa Cruz started their final homestand of the 2015 season as they took on Lakeland College in the first match of back-to-back matches between the two schools. Just like when these two teams played each other in Wisconsin on February 21st, the Banana Slugs swept the Muskies 3-0.  

In their last match, the Banana Slugs defeated Dominican University (IL) 3-1 in River Forest on February 22nd while the Muskies were swept 3-0 by Rivier University in Sheboygan on Friday. 

In the first set, the Banana Slugs would commit seven errors but they would have six more attempts (33-27) than did the Muskies as the Banana Slugs won the first set 25-23. The second set belonged to the Banana Slugs as they hit over .300 for the set and had one more kill (11-10) than did the Muskies. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-16. In the third set, the Banana Slugs had more than double the kills than the Muskies had (16-7) and the Banana Slugs held the Muskies to their lowest hitting percentage of the evening at .217. 

For UC Santa Cruz, Jake Howard had a match high eleven kills and for Lakeland, Alec Redlich had ten kills. Blake Chadwick had a match high thirty six assists for UC Santa Cruz and Jordan Smith had twenty eight for Lakeland. Jake Hurwitz and Jake Landel both led the Banana Slugs with twelve digs and Cole Aiazzi had a match high seventeen digs for the Muskies. 

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .287 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .379 while Lakeland had a .300 hitting percentage with the first set having the best percentage at .407. The Banana Slugs had nine more kills (40-31) than did the Muskies. 

The Banana Slugs will have their next match tomorrow as they finish up their two game series with Lakeland College. First serve is set for 7 pm. The game will be the final home match for the season and will serve as Senior Night.
